VSU Volleyball Clinches CIAA Northern Division Title

ELIZABETH CITY, NC (November 2, 2018)- The Virginia State University Trojan volleyball team defeated the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University with a final score of 3-1 (25-12, 25-14, 21-25, 25-15). The victory not only concludes the regular season conference play for the Trojans, but officially declares them the 2018 CIAA Northern Division Champions. The last time VSU secured the CIAA Northern Division Volleyball Title was in 2013.

Under the leadership of second year head coach Amanda Walker, the Trojans currently hold a 20-10 overall record, 13-4 in the CIAA.

VSU took an early lead in set 1 with a 6-0 run to control the game. The Trojans maintained a powerful rotation of players as the Vikings called for subs when VSU continuously extended their lead in the set. The Trojans attacked their way to a 25-12 set 1 win.

The early lead did not last long for ECSU, as the Trojans jumped ahead to mimic the momentum in set 1. Securing as much as an 11 point lead, VSU dominated set 2 with a 25-14 victory.

Set 3 ruled in favor of the Vikings as they capitalized off of Trojan errors to rally back. VSU fell short of a set 3 win with a score of 25-21. The Trojans regrouped in set 4 to collect a double digit lead for the 25-15 set win and the overall victory.

Senior Myia Jones and sophomore Jailyn Ivey were equally matched on the court with 13 kills each. Alongside 3 aces by Ivey and 4 blocks by Jones, Bria Anderson tallied 47 assists for the Trojans.

VSU will return to action on November 3 to face Kutztown University and West Chester University in a Tri-Match in West Chester, PA. The first serve is set for 2:30pm against the Kutztown Bears followed by a 4:30pm serve against the hosting West Chester Rams.
