ETTRICK, Va. (January 9, 2018) – The Virginia State University women's and men's basketball teams will host Johnson C. Smith University in a Wednesday doubleheader at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
The women's game will tip-off on January 10 at 5:30 p.m., while the men's game will tip-off at 7:30 p.m. following the completion of the women's game. The Virginia State University women's basketball team defeated the Lady Blue Bears of Livingstone College, 81-65, on January 6 to remain undefeated (14-0, 4-0 CIAA).
Junior Chrisanna Green recorded 19 points to lead Virginia State to the victory over Livingstone College (5-8, 0-3 CIAA). Green also contributed 16 total rebounds to finish the contest with a double-double performance.
Senior Endia McKinney chipped in a game-high 18 points and one steal, while Keyana Brown recorded 16 points and six rebounds for VSU. Mia Fitts and Alexis Smith finished the contest with 12 points each respectively.
Johnson C. Smith University (10-4, 2-1 CIAA) women's basketball team will be entering Wednesday's contest after a 92-58 win over the West Virginia Wesleyan (5-7) on December 31. As a team, JCSU shot 47.9% from the field on a 34-of-71 effort. JCSU also hit six three pointers and went 18-of-20 (90%) from the free throw line.
Sophomore Malia Rivers (Pageland, S.C.) led all JCSU scorers with 16 points, going 6-of-16 from the field while knocking down three from distance. Carter added 14 points and was a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line while senior Kendall Adams had 12 points and nine rebounds. Freshman La'Zarea Bowens (Knightdale, N.C.) had 11 points and eight rebounds while Xana Dove (West Palm Beach, Fla.) just missed a double-double, scoring 10 points and hauling in nine rebounds.
The Virginia State University men's basketball team (13-1, 3-1 CIAA) defeated the Blue Bears of Livingstone College, 72-65, on January 6.
Andrew Corum led the way for VSU, dropping 17 points on 6-of-10 shooting to go along with 13 rebounds and one block in 30 minutes of action in their win over Livingstone College. Cyonte Melvin pitched in an additional 14 points and five rebounds. Trey Brown and Walter Williams also scored in double figures, tallying 13 points respectively.
The Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University (8-6, 1-1 CIAA) enters the contest with a 74-70 loss to the Tigers of Tuskegee University last night.
Individually, JCSU got a game-high 18 points from senior Robert Davis (West Friendship, Md.). Davis was perfect from the free throw line (6-of-6) but was just 6-of-24 from the field. Ross finished with a double-double for JCSU, scoring 15 points and hauling in 10 rebounds. Arthur Bennett (Powder Springs, Ga.) chipped in 13 points, while sophomore Cayse Minor (Winston-Salem, N.C.) had nine points and 10 rebounds on the night.
