Softball Takes A Double Loss Against Queens

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ETTRICK, VA- The Virginia State University Softball team fell to the Queens College Knights in a home doubleheader (4-3, 11-2) on March 11.

The Trojans put up a fight in game 1, maintaining control for the 6 innings.

Putting VSU on the board were junior Tatyana Jordan, senior Marissa Hughes, and senior Janay Joseph.

After securing a single and advancing to second with the help of Hughes, Jordan made her way to third base off of a wild pitch. A fly out to right field gave Jordan a window to cross home plate, grasping the first run of the day.

Both teams were equally matched in the 2nd and 3rd inning, with no home plate action. At the bottom of the 4th, VSU gained momentum when Hughes reached first base after an error by the Knights shortstop. Sending the ball flying to left field, Joseph's double advance Hughes home. A first baseman error gave Joseph the chance to secure a run for the home team. At the end of 4 innings, VSU was up 3-0.

The Knights battled back with a single run in the 5th and 6th inning, and 2 runs in the 7th.

VSU fell, 4-3, in game 1.

Queens undoubtedly dominated game 2 with an 11-2 win.

After sending the Knights back to the dugout with 3 quick strikeouts, the Trojans capitalized off the energy in the first inning. Leading off for VSU, junior Maya Bailey secured a single and quickly advanced to second base. A double by Hughes bought Bailey home to put VSU on the board. An error by Queens a few plays later would give Hughes the chance to advance home. VSU maintained the 2-0 lead until the end of the 2nd inning.

The Knights took over, rounding out the game after 6 innings.

VSU will return to the field on Friday, March 17 for the CIAA Roundup in Charlotte, NC. The Trojans will take on Livingstone College at 3pm on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University.
