Ettrick, VA- The Virginia State University men's basketball team suffered their first loss since December 13, falling to Virginia Union University/, 90-70 on February 4.

The Trojans move to an 18-4 overall record, 10-2 in the CIAA.

Sophomore Cyonte Melvin led the Trojans offensively, recording 15 points. Senior Elijah Moore followed up recording 12 points and junior Richard Granberry rounded out the double-digit scoring for the Trojans with 11 points. Melvin and Granberry also pioneered the defensive effort securing eight rebounds each.

The Panthers were offensively and defensively led by James Paige who recorded 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Melvin opened up the game for the Trojans drawing a foul as he knocks down a three pointer for a four point play on the first VSU possession. Both teams exchange baskets, but with 11:50 remaining in the first half a VUU turnover results in a three pointer by Melvin to give the Trojans a 14-12 edge. Paige answered back for the Panthers with a three to give the Panthers a one point lead. The score was tied four times in the first quarter, but at the end of the half the Trojans trailed VUU, 42-36.

Granberry hit a jumper to begin the second half, making it a two possession game. Shortly after, VUU would go on a 15-3 run to create a scoring gap. VSU continued to fight back, but could not dig themselves out of the hole as VUU clinched the 90-70 victory.

VSU ended the night shooting 32.9% (23-70) from the field, 17.9% (5-28) from behind the arc, and 74.1% (20-27) at the line, while VUU ended the game shooting 53% (35-66) from the field, 70.9% (7-10) from behind the arc, and 61.9% (13-21) at the line.

As the final games of the season draw near, the Trojans will take on the Hawks of Chowan University on February 8. Tip-off is set for 7:30pm in Murfreesboro, NC
