Box Score ETTRICK, Va. (December 30, 2017) -- After a late surge by Virginia State, King University came up short in overtime, 79-72, at the VSU Multipurpose Center this afternoon.
With a 67-65 edge in the final minute of the second half, the Trojans (10-1, 1-1 CIAA) stormed back into the game to send the game into overtime. Down by two with 39 seconds remaining, Virginia State's Philip Owens' layup tied the game at 67-67 to force overtime.
Virginia State had all the momentum going into overtime and pulled away early on in the extra period with holding the lead. King University tried to claw back to cut the Trojans lead in the extra period. A 3-pointers by Je'Don Young added points for the Tornadoes, but it wasn't enough. The teams combined to score 17 total points in the five-minute overtime period.
The Trojans had five players with double-digit scoring, paced by Trey Brown's 19 points. He also had seven boards, six assists, one block, and four steals in 36 minutes of action. Richard Granberry ended the contest with a double-double performance with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Brandon Holley finished with 12 points and two assists, while Cyonte Melvin and Philip Owens collected 10 points each respectively.
King University was paced by Je'Don Young, who finished with 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field. Mack Owens added 16 points to help the Tornadoes shoot 40.6 percent (28-61) in the contest.
King University secured a 35-31 lead at the half. Virginia State collected its largest lead in the first half. After the Tornadoes took 33-31 lead with 3 minutes left in the half to help advantage into intermission.
Brown was huge off the bench for Virginia State in the frame, dropping nine points on 3-of-4 shots from the floor. Owens had the hot hand out of the gate, knocking down two treys to spark VSU's scoring attack early on.
UP NEXT: The Trojans will open its 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association play as they host Winston-Salem State University (Jan. 4) at the VSU Multipurpose Center. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
