Box Score ETTRICK, Va. (December 12, 2017) – Two double digit scorers helped lift the Atlantic Region No.2 Virginia State to a 66-62 win over No.4 Wheeling Jesuit tonight at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
Waymond Wright led the way for VSU, dropping 13 points on 6-of-10 shots to go along with four assists and two blocks in 28 minutes of action. Richard Granberry pitched in an additional 10 points and five rebounds. Cyonte Melvin and Trey Brown also chipped in tallying nine and seven, respectively.
Preston Boswell led the way for the WJU Cardinals, collecting a game-high 24 points and seven rebounds.
The Trojans jumped out to a 16-10 lead early in the first half on a layup by Cyonte Melvin, but the Cardinals continued to rally, making it a 27-21 game with 3:06 left in the half.
Virginia State continued to pull away in the final minutes of the frame, knocking down its last eight shots to go into halftime, leading 35-25. Wright and Brown paced the Trojans with seven points each in the half.
Wheeling Jesuit never stopped fighting despite a double-digit deficit at intermission. Pulling within four points of VSU in the second period, Virginia State's 5-of-13 performance from the charity stripe in the half kept the Trojans in the lead.
Wright scored six of his 13 points in the second half to fuel VSU's offense, which shot 43.8 percent (28-64) from the field in the contest.
Virginia State's offense remained consistent in the second half, as six players scored at least one point on the night. The Trojans added 31 points in the second half to win the game, shooting 40 percent from the free throw line for the night.
WITH THE WIN: The Trojans improved to a 7-0 record and remain undefeated as they hit the road to open conference play.
UP NEXT: The Trojans will travel to face the Falcons of St. Augustine's University in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association matchup on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at Emery Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
