Virginia State (2-1) rebounded from a slow start to defeat Cheyey (0-2), 71-65, in men's basketball action. Lamar Kearse and James Vann shared game-high scoring honors for Virginia State with 13 points apiece. Larry Savage scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the victory. The Trojans shot a torrid 56 percent from the field while limiting Cheyney to just 31 percent accuracy.
Falling behind, 12-4, in the opening minutes of the contest, the Trojans reeled off eight straight points to tie the contest, 12-12, with 13:28 to go in the opening half. A 15-1 run, gave the Trojans a commanding, 27-13, lead midway through the first half. The Wolves battled back to close the gap to 34-27 with 6:31 remaining. Virginia State went on a 7-4 run to lead, 41-31, at intermission.
After Cheyney scored the first basket of the second half, Virginia State scored seven unanswered points to lead 48-34. The Wolves battled back twice, cutting the deficit to single digits but could get no closer until the game's final minute. A Cheyney three-pointer with 21 second left cut the margin to five points but the Trojans connected on a free throw in the final seconds to thwart the comeback.
Jerrod Johnson led the Wolves with 24 points while teammate Deshaen Curtis tallied 14 while grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
The Trojans play Barton in the first game of the Pickle Classic at Mount Olive on Friday, Nov. 22. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
