Virginia State Volleyball Team Advances to CIAA Championship

Virginia State claimed a spot at the CIAA semifinals next weekend after a 3-0 win over the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith on Sunday evening.  The Lady Golden Bulls end their season with a 14-16 overall record while the Trojans advance with a 17-10 record on the season. 

The Trojans were led by Aubree Parker with eight kills while Diamond Simpson notched 31 assists.  Johnson C. Smith's Jane Tukia led all players in the contest with 10 kills and Kayla Bazmore tallied 18 assists.  Adriana Hazou hauled in 10 kills in the victory for Virginia State. 

The Trojans made quick work of the Lady Golden Bulls in the first set with a 25-17 victory.  Johnson C. Smith battled back in the second set before falling 25-22 to the host institution, 25-22.  The Trojans clinched a spot for themselves at the CIAA Tournament next weekend with a 25-20 win over Johnson C. Smith.

Earlier in the day, the Trojans, No. 1 seed in the Northern Division, downed Johnson C. Smith, the No. 4 seed in the Southern Division, in straight sets.

Later in the day, Virginia State fell to Fayetteville State in a five set match. Virginia State used home court momentum to push past Fayetteville State 25-22 in the first set before falling to the Lady Broncos 25-16 in set two. The Lady Broncos continued to hang on in the third set with a 25-20 victory to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Trojans battled to sneak past the Lady Broncos 25-20 in set four, forcing a fifth and final set. Fayetteville State jumped out to an early lead in the set and never looked back; edging Virginia State 15-13 in set five sets to earn the 3-2 match win.
