Virginia State (14-7, 11-2) defeated CIAA rival Elizabeth City State (9-9, 9-6) in straight sets, 25-15, 25-23 and 25-23 in volleyball action at Daniel Gymnasium on Oct. 29. Virginia State has won six straight matches and 11 of the last 13. In addition, Coach Ivana Rich's team is 4-0 at home this season.
The match was designated 'Dig Pink Night' with a goal of raising awareness of breast cancer. Virginia State players wore pink jerseys and Daniel Gym was decorated in pink for the match. A bake sale and raffle were conducted with funds going toward breast cancer research.
Diamond Simpson had 28 assists to lead the Trojans and
Imani Wood finished with three service aces.
Aubree Parker had 14 digs while teammate
Adriana Hazou totaled 13. Elizabeth City State's Krystal Sawyer finished with 17 assists while Rosetta Becerra had 12 digs followed by Emmesha White (11) and Grace Barrett (11).
After winning the first set, 25-15, the Trojans had to battle to win the match. Virginia State won a back-and-forth, seesaw second set, 25-23 to take a 2-0 lead. In the highly-competitive third set, Virginia State had to rally to post a razor-thin 25-23 win.
The Trojans return to action on Thursday, Oct. 31 against Randolph-Macon at 7:00 p.m. at Daniel Gymnasium.
