Michael Champion is a proud Virginia State University alumni. He joined the Virginia State Men’s Basketball Program in 2021 as the team manager under the leadership of Coach Lonnie Blow, Jr. Having a strong work ethic with the coaches and players, Michael supports the powerful vision, coaching philosophy, and wealth of basketball expertise that Coach Blow exemplifies and teaches his players and staff on a daily basis. He served as the Graduate Assistant in the last year of the VSU JV Men’s Basketball team in 2023-2024 under Coach Waymond Wright. He is pursuing his Master’s Degree at Virginia State University in Sports Management.
Michael is a native of Virginia Beach, VA. Prior to serving as the manager, Michael came to Virginia State University with a passion and enthusiasm for basketball through his working/volunteer experience. He was the Boys’ Varsity Basketball team manager for Landstown High School, home of the Governor’s Stem and Technology Academy, in Virginia Beach. During this time, he experienced multiple Virginia Beach District Championships, 6A Conference Regional Championships, and the school’s first ever Virginia 6A State Championship (25-3 season record, 2018-2019) under the leadership of Coach Dwight Robinson. In addition to basketball, he also served as the Football Manager in 2019-2020.
He graduated high school with distinct honors in 2020 with a 4.2 GPA and held multiple leadership positions. At VSU during the 2022-2023 academic year, he served as the compliance treasurer for the Phi Epsilon Kappa Honorary Fraternity. Amazingly, he graduated from the Virginia State University Honors College (Summa Cum Laude) in 2023, one year ahead of his original expected graduating class earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation with a minor in Sports Management. He loves tutoring others in various academic subjects and has a Spanish Dual Literacy Certification as well as a Martial Arts Black Belt.
He served in numerous roles within basketball logistics/statistics and player assistance for the Legendary NBA Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, Boo Williams AAU, 7 Cities Hampton Roads Pro Am, the Virginia Beach Sports Center, North Carolina Phenom Hoops Report Basketball Program, United Collegiate Athletic Association, the Petersburg Cavaliers of the East Coast Basketball League, the Hampton Roads Sports Officials Association, and the Loveday Summer Basketball League in Richmond, VA.
