Ettrick, Va. – A second-half goal from Loryn Sturgis proved to be the difference as the Virginia State University women's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 1-0 victory over Mount Olive on Wednesday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, the Trojans broke through in the 76th minute when Sturgis found the back of the net for the game's lone goal. The score marked Sturgis' first goal of the season and gave Virginia State the lead with just under 14 minutes remaining.
Virginia State's defense held strong down the stretch as Mount Olive pushed for the equalizer. Goalkeeper Ava Patterson turned away five shots on goal to earn the shutout, including several key saves in the second half.
Sturgis led the Trojans offensively with two shots on goal, while Morgan Parris and Jada Savage also recorded shots on target. Virginia State finished with six total shots and four shots on goal.
The Trojans improved to 2-0-0 on the season with the victory, while Mount Olive fell to 1-2-0.
