ETTRICK, Va. — Virginia State mounted a dominant fourth-quarter comeback to defeat the University of the District of Columbia, 12-9, on Saturday afternoon.
Trailing 8-6 heading into the final period, the Trojans erupted for six goals in the fourth to secure the victory and improve to 2-8 on the season.
Virginia State found itself in an early hole, as UDC opened the game with two first-quarter goals and carried a 6-3 advantage into halftime. The Firebirds extended their lead to 8-6 late in the third quarter, putting pressure on the Trojans entering the final frame.
The momentum shifted quickly in the fourth. Miles Jackson ignited the rally with his third goal of the game, followed by scores from Amari Kennedy and Devray Kirkland II to give Virginia State its first lead since early in the second quarter. The Trojans continued to pour it on, with Andre Bigham and Noah Byers adding key goals during the stretch.
Kennedy capped the scoring with his second goal of the contest in the final minute to seal the win.
Jackson led the Trojans with three goals, while Kirkland II contributed two goals and two assists. Bigham and Kennedy each added two goals apiece, helping power a balanced offensive effort that saw seven different players find the back of the net.
Virginia State's defense tightened in the second half, holding UDC to just one goal in the fourth quarter. Goalkeeper Jace Wiggins made 10 saves in the win.
UDC was led by Myles Henry, who finished with five goals, and Kalam Howlett, who added two goals and an assist.
The Trojans outshot UDC 43-33 and capitalized on key opportunities late, scoring twice on extra-man chances.
