ETTRICK, Va. – The Virginia State University women's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought 13–12 overtime contest to Chestnut Hill on Saturday afternoon at Rogers Stadium.
Virginia State (1-3) battled throughout the afternoon, holding a lead midway through the game and forcing overtime after a late equalizer in the final minute of regulation. Chestnut Hill (2-1) ultimately secured the game-winning goal with 31 seconds remaining in the second overtime period.
The Trojans were led offensively by Unique Anthony, who scored four goals in the contest. Bryelle Small and Kayla Carroll-Williams each added three goals, while Carea Tuck finished with two goals. Carroll-Williams also recorded an assist to finish with four points.
Virginia State opened the scoring early when Tuck found the back of the net to give the Trojans a 1–0 lead. The teams traded goals throughout the first quarter, with VSU holding a narrow advantage heading into the second period.
The Trojans extended their lead in the second quarter as Small and Carroll-Williams scored back-to-back goals, followed by another score from Anthony to give VSU a multi-goal advantage. Chestnut Hill responded with a late push before halftime, trimming the deficit to one goal at the break.
Both teams continued to exchange momentum in the second half. The Trojans maintained their offensive pressure behind Anthony, Carroll-Williams and Small, while the defense worked to limit scoring opportunities from the Griffins.
With time winding down in regulation, Small converted a free-position opportunity with under a minute remaining to tie the game at 12–12 and send the contest into overtime.
Neither team was able to find the net during the first overtime period. In the second overtime, however, Chestnut Hill capitalized on a late opportunity, scoring the decisive goal with 31 seconds remaining to secure the victory.
