MONTEVALLO, Ala. — The Virginia State women's lacrosse team dropped a road contest to Montevallo, 20-4, on Sunday afternoon at Lacrosse Stadium.
Montevallo jumped out to an early lead, scoring four goals in the opening minutes of the first quarter. Virginia State answered midway through the period when Jhalin Hooks found the back of the net to get the Trojans on the board, but the Falcons closed the quarter with two more goals to take a 6-1 advantage.
The Falcons continued to build momentum in the second quarter, adding seven goals to extend their lead to 13-1 at halftime.
Virginia State showed resilience in the second half. Kayla Carroll-Williams scored on a free-position opportunity in the third quarter to cut into the deficit. Montevallo responded with several goals of its own to maintain control of the contest heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, the Trojans added two more goals. Carea Tuck converted a free-position shot, and Nakiyah Jones capped the scoring for Virginia State with a goal in the final seconds of the game.
Goalkeeper Ilyana Jones recorded nine saves for the Trojans while playing the full 60 minutes in net.
Virginia State finished the contest with 21 ground balls, with Nakiyah Jones leading the team with three. Carroll-Williams also contributed across the field with two ground balls and two draw controls.
