Wise, Va. (Mar. 1, 2026)-The Virginia State University women's lacrosse team dropped a 16-6 decision to UVA Wise on Saturday afternoon at Carl Smith Stadium.
VSU (1-2) battled throughout the contest, but UVA Wise (5-1) used a strong first half and capitalized on several man-up opportunities to secure the win.
UVA Wise jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the opening quarter before the Trojans found their rhythm in the second. After a free-position goal from Kayla Carroll-William in the first, VSU added three goals in the second quarter. Sophia Toye connected on a man-up opportunity off an assist from Nakiyah Jones, while Carea Tuck and Milan Poole each found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 9-4 at halftime.
Carroll-William led the Trojans offensively with two goals, both coming on free-position attempts. Jones recorded a goal and an assist, while Tuck, Toye, and Poole each added a goal apiece.
Despite being outshot 39-12 overall, VSU capitalized on key opportunities, converting 4-of-6 free-position attempts. Defensively, the Trojans collected 14 ground balls, with Noel Johnson-Montoya and Morgan Morris each contributing strong efforts on the back line.
Goalkeeper Ilyana Jones played all 60 minutes in net, recording 11 saves against 39 shots faced.
