BOWIE, MD --Davian Coleman pulled down 12 rebounds and Tim Uzochuwku added 12 more, and the Virginia State men's basketball team defeated the Bowie State Bulldogs 67-61 on the road Wednesday.
The Trojans (18-9, 11-4) had three players score in double figures, led by Uzochuwku, who notched a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Jacob Cooper tacked on 13 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals and Jared Clawson helped out with 11 points and six steals.
Coleman pulled down seven offensive rebounds to pace the Virginia State offense which grabbed 20 boards and turned them into 10 second chance points.
Virginia State did a great job disrupting Bowie State shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Coleman led the way individually for the Trojans with two rejections.
How It Happened
After falling behind 31-25, Virginia State went on an 8-0 run with 2:35 left in the first half to take a 33-31 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Virginia State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 18 of its 33 points close to the basket.
Bowie State proceeded to take a 54-51 lead before Virginia State went on a 10-0 run, finished off by Clawson's three, to seize a 61-54 lead with 3:42 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Trojans still cruised the rest of the way for the 67-61 win. Virginia State got out on the break in the period, scoring 11 fast break points.
