PETERSBURG, VA --The Virginia State men's basketball team shot 50 percent from beyond the arc on the way to an 81-69 victory over the Elizabeth City State Vikings at home Saturday.
The Trojans (17-9, 10-4) had four players score in double figures, led by William Hopkins, who had 19 points, six rebounds and two steals. Jacob Cooper added 13 points and six assists and Jared Clawson chipped in as well with 11 points and four assists.
Virginia State out-rebounded Elizabeth City State 39-30 in Saturday's game, paced by Davian Coleman's six boards.
Virginia State's defense held Elizabeth City State to only 33.3 percent shooting from the field. The Trojans also limited Trevor Smith to 2-of-13 shooting and five points in the game.

Virginia State started out the scoring by going on a 9-0 run, culminating in a three from Hopkins, to take an early lead with 17:29 left in the first half. The Trojans then added five points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 45-31 advantage. Virginia State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 14 of its 45 total points.
Virginia State kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run to grow the lead to 56-37 with 14:38 to go in the contest. The Vikings narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Trojans still cruised the rest of the way for the 81-69 win. Virginia State took care of business in the paint, recording 18 of its 36 points in the lane.
