Trojans earn 5-set win against Elizabeth City State

PETERSBURG, VA --The Virginia State volleyball team displayed impressive determination with a 3-2 win over the Elizabeth City State Vikings Thursday at home at Multipurpose Center.

The conference win improved Virginia State's record to 12-7 overall and 10-0 in CIAA action.

The Trojans were led by a double-double from Noa Roberts, who registered 20 kills and 10 digs on the day. Gracie Darville also added 14 kills to help the offense. On the defensive end, Kellee Craig chipped in for with 22 digs to go with five blocks from Anya McKinley.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The Trojans fell in a tight first set, losing 26-24 in a game that was tied seven times and had three lead changes.

SET 2 | Virginia State fought back from a first-set loss to take the second set 29-27, tying the match at 1-1. The Trojans came out on top of a close second set, winning in a stanza that was tied 12 times and had six lead changes. Virginia State's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Elizabeth City State attacks in the stanza and capitalizing on 10 Elizabeth City State attacking errors on the way to victory.

SET 3 | Virginia State won again in the third set to make it a 2-1 match. The Trojans grabbed control of the set early when the score was 4-3 and held the lead the rest of the way to win 25-17. Virginia State ended on a strong note, opening up its biggest lead of the stanza, eight points, to finish off the set.

SET 4 | Virginia State couldn't keep the win streak going, as the Vikings forced a fifth set with a 25-17 fourth-set win. The Trojans trailed by as many as eight points as Elizabeth City State grabbed the advantage for good at 6-5 and Virginia State wasn't able to recover in a set that was tied up three times before the Vikings took over.

SET 5 | Virginia State opened a two sets to one lead and held off Elizabeth City State's comeback attempt, which included a fourth set victory, to win the fifth set 15-9 and the match 3-2. The Trojans ran away with set five 15-9. Virginia State took the lead for good at 8-7 in a set that showcased two lead changes before the Trojans took over the lead.
