SALISBURY, NC --The Virginia State men's basketball team fell to the Livingstone Blue Bears 60-59 on the road Thursday on Erick Coffey's buzzer-beating shot with just two seconds left on the clock.
Tim Uzochuwku led the Trojans (8-8, 1-3) with 16 points and six rebounds. Jacob Cooper added eight points, six rebounds and two steals and Marcus Jackson helped out with eight points off the bench.
Led by Cooper's four offensive rebounds, Virginia State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 19 boards that resulted in 20 second chance points.
Virginia State did a great job disrupting Livingstone shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Davian Coleman led the way individually for the Trojans with two rejections.
How It Happened
After falling behind 15-10, Virginia State went on a 6-0 run with 9:46 left in the first half to take a 16-15 lead. The Trojans then maintained that lead and entered halftime with a 26-25 advantage. Virginia State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 12 of its 26 total points.
Livingstone proceeded to take a 58-52 lead before Virginia State went on a 7-0 run, finished off by William Hopkins' layup, to seize a 59-58 lead with 48 seconds to go in the contest. Livingstone re-asserted control, outscoring the Trojans 2-0 the rest of the way to hand Virginia State the 60-59 loss. Virginia State took care of business in the paint, recording 22 of its 33 points in the lane.
