Defensive effort leads Virginia State past Elizabeth City State 58-45

ELIZABETH CITY, NC --The Virginia State women's basketball team held Elizabeth City State to just 16.7 percent from 3-point range in a 2-for-12 shooting performance on the way to a 58-45 victory over the Vikings on the road Saturday.

The Trojans (13-4, 7-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Maya Ellis, who had 15 points and eight rebounds. Kendahl Spearman tacked on 13 points and two steals from the bench and Shayla Wyatt added eight points and three steals.

Virginia State pulled down 30 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Elizabeth City State's 21, led by Ellis' eight boards. The Trojans also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 10 rebounds into 10 second chance points.

Virginia State forced 21 Elizabeth City State turnovers while committing 18 themselves in Saturday's game. The Trojans turned those takeaways into 26 points on the offensive end of the floor. Wyatt's three steals led the way for Virginia State.

How It Happened

Virginia State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 12-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Virginia State then started off the second quarter by going on a 14-0 run to take a 21-12 lead. The Trojans proceeded to tack on three points to that lead and enjoyed a 26-14 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 19 points.

Virginia State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 5-0 run to expand its lead further to 37-24 with 3:48 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Vikings had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Trojans still entered the fourth quarter with a 39-34 edge. Virginia State took advantage of four Elizabeth City State turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of takeaways.

Virginia State kept its lead intact before going on a 7-0 run to grow the lead to 50-40 with 3:46 to go in the contest. The Trojans kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 58-45 win. Virginia State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 16 of its 19 points in the paint.
