Virginia State earns 54-49 victory over Lincoln (PA) after trailing at the half

PETERSBURG, VA --The Virginia State women's basketball team went into halftime trailing Lincoln (PA) 29-21, but fought back from the deficit to defeat the Lions 54-49 at home Wednesday.

Kendahl Spearman led the Trojans (14-4, 8-2) with 24 points and six rebounds. Shayla Wyatt also added two points, eight rebounds and four steals and Sydney Roberts helped out with five points and five assists.

Virginia State collected 38 rebounds in Wednesday's game compared to Lincoln (PA)'s 33, led by Wyatt's eight boards. The Trojans also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 17 rebounds into 15 second chance points.

Virginia State's defense held Lincoln (PA) to only 35.7 percent shooting from the field, including 0 percent from beyond the arc. The Trojans also limited Alaila Walker to 2-of-17 shooting and four points in the game.

How It Happened

Virginia State started out the scoring by going on a 5-0 run, culminating in a bucket from Alexis Blake, to take an early lead with 8:44 left in the first quarter. The Trojans then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 14-11.

Lincoln (PA) kept adding to that lead, building a 23-11 advantage before Virginia State went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Roberts, to narrow its deficit to 23-18. Lincoln (PA) responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Trojans trailing 29-21 heading into halftime.

After intermission, Virginia State cut its deficit to 33-30 before going on a 7-0 run to grab a 37-33 lead with 4:32 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Lions had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Trojans still entered the fourth quarter with a 40-38 edge. Virginia State played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 19 points in the paint.

Lincoln (PA) proceeded to take a 47-45 lead before Virginia State went on a 6-0 run to seize a 51-47 lead with 1:15 to go in the contest. The Trojans kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 54-49 win. Virginia State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 14 of its 14 total points.
