PETERSBURG, VA --The Virginia State women's basketball team scored 33 points off of turnovers on the way to a 74-55 win against the Bowie State Bulldogs at home Wednesday.
The Trojans (12-4, 6-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Kendahl Spearman, who had 18 points and two steals. Sydney Roberts added 16 points and two steals and Alexis Blake helped out with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Virginia State forced 26 Bowie State turnovers while committing 19 themselves in Wednesday's game. The Trojans turned those takeaways into 33 points on the offensive end of the floor. Shayla Wyatt led the way individually with four steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 6-5, Virginia State went on an 11-0 run with 6:45 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Blake, to take a 16-6 lead. The Trojans then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 16-11 advantage. Virginia State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 16 points close to the basket.
Virginia State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 6:37 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Kiara Beal, to increase its lead to 24-15. The Bulldogs cut into that lead, but the Trojans still enjoyed a 32-27 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia State saw non-starters score 10 of its 16 total points off the bench in the quarter.
Virginia State wasted no time building on its lead, going on an 8-0 run, punctuated by a three from Roberts, to expand its lead further to 40-27 with 8:45 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Trojans added three points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 54-38 edge. Virginia State knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 22 total points.
Virginia State started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on an 8-0 run, finished off by Tamia Darden's layup, to grow the lead to 62-38 with 8:38 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Trojans still cruised the rest of the way for the 74-55 win. Virginia State took advantage of five Bowie State turnovers in the quarter, scoring 12 points off of those takeaways.
