PETERSBURG, VA --The Virginia State men's basketball team got a 26-point showing from the bench on the way to a 77-64 win against the Bowie State Bulldogs at home Wednesday.
The Trojans (11-9, 4-4) had four players score in double figures, led by Jacob Cooper, who had 20 points, five assists and two steals. William Hopkins added 12 points and Amare Wimbush helped out with 12 points and two steals from the bench.
Virginia State grabbed 47 rebounds in Wednesday's game compared to Bowie State's 34, led by 11 boards from Tim Uzochuwku. The Trojans also put in work on the offensive glass, turning 17 rebounds into 19 second chance points.
Virginia State did a great job disrupting Bowie State shots in the contest, coming away with six blocks. Davian Coleman's two rejections led the way individually for the Trojans.

After jumping out to a 32-26 advantage, Virginia State went on a 7-0 run with 4:26 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Wimbush, to increase its lead to 39-26. The Trojans then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 39-32 advantage. Virginia State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 20 of its 39 points close to the basket.
Virginia State started tacking on points in the second half almost immediately, going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Cooper's three, to grow the lead to 49-32 with 18:39 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Trojans still cruised the rest of the way for the 77-64 win. Virginia State took care of business in the paint, recording 20 of its 38 points in the lane.
