Ettrick, Va. (Aug. 21, 2025)-Virginia State University Athletics will recognize three milestone football championship teams during its 2025 Homecoming celebration. The special recognition will take place on
Saturday, October 25, at Rogers Stadium, as the Trojans honor the legacies of programs that brought championship glory to VSU.
This year's celebration will mark:
- 30th Anniversary of the 1995 CIAA Championship Team
- 55th Anniversary of the 1970 CIAA Championship Team
- 80th Anniversary of the 1945 CIAA Championship Team
The
1995 Trojans, led by Head Coach
Lou Anderson, captured VSU's first conference title since 1972. All-Conference selections that season included
Robert Morgan, Virgil Moore, Telley Priester, and Kelvin Kinney.
The
1970 team, coached by
Walter Lovett, a proud VSU alumnus, earned a 32–14 victory over Johnson C. Smith in the CIAA Championship Game. The team was anchored by standout
DT Larry Brooks, who received All-CIAA honors.
The
1945 Trojans, coached by
Harry R. Jefferson, posted an undefeated 8–0–2 record (6–0–1 in the CIAA) and capped the season with a victory over North Carolina Central in the
Piedmont Tobacco Bowl. All-Conference honorees included
Francis Jolly, David Battle, John Jones, and Charles Price.
