Ettrick, Va. (Aug 15, 2025)- Virginia State University women's basketball coach Millette Green has announced the hiring of Kiera Howard and Anita Pettiford Yee as assistant coaches with Janayla White staying on staff from the previous regime.
Kiera Howard, a native of McDonough Georgia, an alumna from Augusta University with her bachelor's degree in business administration and master's degree in public administration.
"I am excited that Kiera is joining my coaching staff," Coach Green remarked. "She was the heart and soul of my team for four years at Augusta. She knows my coaching style, philosophy, and system. Kiera has a strong ability to connect with people. Her infectious energy will be impactful to the program and the Trojan community."
Howard is a two-time Peach Belt All-Conference Selection and ranks as the 11th all-time leading scorer (1,149) and third in all-time assists (425) at Augusta University. Anita Pettiford Yee rounds out the newcomers on the staff. Yee was a member of the 2002 CIAA Championship team. As a member of the VSU women's basketball team from 1998-2002 she brings a wealth of experience not only in basketball but VSU Women's Basketball history.
"Anita is a competitor and winner. She is a member of the 2002 Conference Championship team which earned a spot in the hall of fame in 2023. Anita knows what it takes to be a Trojan on and off the court. I am looking forward to her pouring back into the sisterhood at Virginia State University Women's Basketball." said Coach Green.
Coach White, who was on staff as an assistant coach for the past two seasons, will remain. In her two years on staff, the Trojans have gone 46-12. White coaches the post players who have excelled under her leadership with Carmen Kweti winning defensive player of the year honors this past season. Three players have earned all-conference honors under Coach White's instruction.
"I am excited to welcome Janayla back for another season. She knows the league inside and out, and I was truly impressed by her ability to connect with our student-athletes. Her instruction during skill sessions with our forwards and post players was promising, and I look forward to seeing the impact she will make this year." said Coach Green
