VSU Head Women’s Basketball Coach Nadine Domond Steps Down

Ettrick, Va. (Apr. 9, 2025) — Coach Nadine Domond announced on Wednesday that she is stepping down from her role as Head Women's Basketball Coach at Virginia State University to pursue other opportunities.

In her three seasons at the helm of the VSU Women's Basketball program, Coach Domond compiled an impressive overall record of 58-28, including a dominant 5-1 record against CIAA rival Virginia Union University, and an overall conference record of 35-14.

During her tenure, she led the Trojans to two CIAA Tournament Semifinal appearances (2023, 2024), one CIAA Tournament Finals appearance (2025), and a berth in the 2025 NCAA Tournament.

Coach Domond took over the program in 2022. In her inaugural season, the Trojans finished 12-16 overall and 8-8 in CIAA play, advancing to the CIAA Tournament quarterfinals. The 2023–24 season showcased the program's rise under her leadership, as VSU secured 23 wins, earned a spot in the top 10 of the WBCA Coaches Poll, and reached the CIAA Tournament semifinals.

This past season, the Trojans once again recorded 23 wins, were crowned CIAA Northern Division Champions, and earned their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2018. It also marked the program's first back-to-back 20-win seasons since 2016–17 and 2017–18.

Over three seasons, eight different Trojans earned All-CIAA honors under Coach Domond's guidance. This past season, she was named CIAA Women's Basketball Coach of the Year and was recognized on the Coaching Excellence Honor Roll. Carmen Kweti was named the CIAA Women's Basketball Defensive Player of the Year, and in the previous season, Amesha Miller received the NCAA's 50th Anniversary Scholarship.

Coach Domond also prioritized academic achievement, coaching three Academic All-District honorees and mentoring both Carmen Kweti and Anii Harris, who were named Academic All-American finalists by the College Sports Communicators (CSC).

Most recently, she was selected to coach in the inaugural HBCU Women's All-Star Game, held on Sunday, April 6, in San Antonio, Texas.

Official Statement from Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics, Tiffani-Dawn B. Sykes

"I want to thank Coach Domond for her leadership of the Trojans Women's Basketball program over the past three seasons. Her impact has been felt far beyond the court—she has played a significant role in shaping the lives of our student-athletes and elevating the competitiveness of our program.

The search for our next head coach is already underway, and I am confident in our ability to attract an exceptional leader who will build upon our foundation of success. Our goal is not only to dominate within our conference, but to elevate the Trojans to national prominence.

We are fortunate to have a strong and united commitment to excellence from our university administration, athletics department, alumni, and boosters. I look forward to welcoming the next head coach to the Land of Troy as we continue to push this program to new heights."
