VSU puts up 19 runs in rout of Christendom

Ettrick, Va. (Apr. 9, 2025)- The Virginia State University Baseball team put up 19 runs in a win over Christendom College (9-13) in seven innings due to the run rule. 

In the top of the first the Crusaders hit an RBI double, but the Trojans answered in the bottom half after Thomas Ealey walked, Jaden Guthrie then singled setting up runners on the corners. TJ McGowan then hit an RBI ground out. CC added one more run in the second. Matthew May started the second with a hit by pitch, Hector Rivera then got on by an error to put runners in scoring position with zero outs. Marquis Smith then drew a walk to load the bases. Ealey walked in a run, Guthrie was HBP, McGowan walked, and two wild pitches brought in two more runs. Victor Johnson then collected the first hit of the inning with a double to score McGowan making it 7-2 after two innings. 

 The Crusaders answered with three runs in the third and Ealey doubled in a run in the bottom half. The Trojans pitched a clean fourth inning then scored six runs on only three hits in their half of the inning. The inning started with Jaquan Tucker hitting a homerun over the left field wall. V. Johnson then singled followed by Norman Jackson walked. Matthew May then hit a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners up 90 feet. Rivera then walked the bases loaded. Smith and Guthrie both walked in a run, then McGowan then hit a bases clearing triple to right field to make it 14-5. 

CC added three more runs in the fifth and the Trojans got on the board after a wild pitch brought home their run. In the bottom of the sixth David Johnson pinch hit and drew a walk. V. Johnson doubled to bring D. Johnson home. Jackson then singled to move V. Johnson to third. Julius Turner singled through the right side to bring home a run. A pass ball put the winning runs in scoring position. Erik Romero was then HBP before Smith hit a bases clearing double making it 19-8. 

With the win VSU improved to 5-16 and will be back in action tomorrow, Thursday April 10 against Newport News Apprentice school for a double header starting at 1 p.m.
