Trojans drop twin bill to Builders

Ettrick, Va. (Apr. 10, 2025)- The Virginia State University Baseball team welcomed the Newport News Apprentice School (19-11) to Whaley Colbert Field for a double header and dropped both games 3-0 and then 3-1.

GAME 1 VSU 0 APP 3

  • In the second inning Victor Johnson singled to left field, Jaron Ward then singled through the left side. A fly out to right let Johnson move up to third but he was left stranded

  • The Builders started the third with a walk. A failed sacrifice attempt kept the runner on first. Stevens then struck out the next batter to get the second out. The next batter hit a fly ball to right field, but an error allowed both the batter and runner to score making it 2-0

  • Apprentice added one more run in the fourth after a double down the left field line

  • The Trojans in the seventh saw David Johnson hit a single to right field. Erik Romero then bunted him to second. Thomas Ealey singled up the middle to put runners on the corners but both runners were left stranded

GAME 2 VSU 1 APP 3

  • The Builders managed to get runners on the corners in the first with one out, but both were left there after Preston Branzelle struck out a batter and then got a fly out to right field

  • The Trojans went down in order in their half of the first. To start a second Newport News Apprentice walked then doubled to get two runners in scoring position with no one out. A sacrifice fly and a pass ball let both of those runners come around to score making it 2-0

  • The Trojans answered with Guthrie hitting a home run over the left field wall. V. Johnson then drew a walk and Matthew May hit a double just past the third baseman to get runners in scoring position, but both were left where they stood

  • Neither team would have a real chance until the fifth when the Builders started with a double. Then an error allowed the run to score and the batter to get to second

  • The Trojans couldn't get another runner past first until the sixth when May advanced to second after a V. Johnson single

With the sweep Virginia State drops to 5-18 overall and will be back in action Saturday April 12 at 1 p.m. against Bluefield State for a double header.
