Virginia State Dominates Elizabeth City State in Two-Game Showdown
Ettrick, VA – On April 22, 2205, Virginia State University's softball team faced off against the Vikings from Elizabeth City State University in an exhilarating doubleheader that had fans on the edge of their seats!
Game 1 VSU 7 vs ECSU 1
Virginia State kicked off the game with an explosive bottom of the 1st inning, scoring four runs, including a two-run double from
Shamya Hankins and an RBI double from
Mylia Knight. The crowd was electric!
In the top of the 3rd, Elizabeth City State responded as E. Fleming hit a double and was brought home by E. Bailey's fielder's choice, but Virginia State's defense stood strong.
The action continued in the bottom of the 4th as
Jaya Diggs-Hagwood and
Mylia Knight added three more runs, keeping the fans on their feet. Despite some solid efforts from Fleming and S. Simmons, Elizabeth City State couldn't penetrate Virginia State's defense, which maintained its lead with impressive skill and determination.Â
Game 2 VSU 5 vs ECSU 3
In an exhilarating match-up, Virginia State seized an early advantage in the bottom of the 1st inning, scoring an unearned run thanks to
Mylia Knight's single and a left fielder's error. Elizabeth City State quickly retaliated in the top of the 2nd, with K. Fields crossing home on C. Hoggard's clutch RBI single, tying the game at 1-1.
The real fireworks happened in the bottom of the 4th, where Virginia State unleashed a 4-run rally.
Hailey Darrington's crafty bunt single and
Shamya Hankins' sharp hit propelled the team forward. Despite E. Fleming's valiant efforts, scoring two runs in the top of the 7th, Elizabeth City State couldn't complete the comeback. Virginia State's defense held strong, sealing a nail-biting 5-3 victory!
The Trojans are set to return to the diamond on Friday, April 25, 2025, for a doubleheader against the Virginia Union Panthers at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM.
