Trojans strong second half not enough;drop match to Tiffin

Tiffin, Ohio (Mar. 8, 2025)- Playing in their first match up against Tiffin University the Virginia State University women's lacrosse team second half comeback not enough as they drop the match 13-11.

After Naima Courtney won the opening draw control, Carea Tuck only needed 54 seconds to score the first goal of the match. The Dragons would answer three minutes later before the Trojans would score back-to-back goals by Aniyah White and another by Tuck to have a 3-1 advantage with seven minutes left in the opening quarter. Tiffin scored twice to end the stanza to tie the game going into the second period.

After Skye Whiting won the draw control a VSU turnover gave Tiffin the ball and they did not waste the opportunity scoring right after the clear to retake the lead 4-3. However the Trojans would cause a turnover in their offensive end, Tuck would pick up the ground ball and fine Unique Anthony who netted the goal. Each team would score within a minute of each other with Tiffin going into halftime up 6-5.

The Dragons scored the first two goals in the third stanza, before White answered with a free position goal. However, Tiffin would answer with three straight goals before J'Daria Thompson caused a turnover, got the clear and ran all the way down to score a goal with just under five minutes remaining in the quarter. Tuck added one more goal with 33 seconds left to make it 11-8 going into the final 15 minutes of the game.

It took six minutes for a team to score in the final period, but in a three-minute span (9:04-6:12) Tiffin scored a goal followed by three straights for the Trojans courtesy of Tuck and White making it 12-11 with six minutes left. However, the Dragons would score with 4:05 left then would play strong defense to hold the Trojans to one shot in the final minutes.

Both Tuck and Hollie Grimes collected five ground balls followed closely behind by Noel Johnson-Montoya with four. VSU drops to 1-5 on the season and will return home to play St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday March 11 at 2 pm.
