Softball Battles Back, Splitting the Doubleheader Against Chowan



Ettrick, VA- Trojans softball played the postponed game against the Hawks of Chowan University on Saturday, March 2, 2025, at 1 & 3 pm. 


Game 1 VSU 11 vs Chowan 9

Virginia State jumped to an early 3-0 lead with Lauren Parham's single, Jaya Diggs-Hagwood scoring on an error, and Mylia Knight's single. They extended their advantage to 7-0 by the end of the second inning, with Mylia Knight's double driving in three runs and Shamya Hankins benefiting from another error. Chowan rallied back, with C. James driving in two runs to make it 7-2, followed by E. Fowler's sacrifice fly, narrowing the score to 7-3. Chowan then scored five runs, tying the game at 7-7 with E. Ingle's single and E. Fowler's RBI, before taking the lead at 9-7 after K. Helton's single. Virginia State quickly regained the lead, scoring three runs on wild pitches and Lauren Parham's two-RBI single to make it 10-8. They increased the lead to 11-8 when Nia Hall grounded out, bringing in Nyla Brown. Chowan kept battling back, with K. Helton scoring K. Springle, closing the gap to 11-9. Ultimately, the Trojans won with the final score of 11-9. 

Game 2 VSU 6 vs Chowan 8

Chowan jumped out to a strong start, scoring three runs in the first inning. C. James's single brought in K. Helton, followed by E. Ingle capitalizing on an error to score M. Misenheim, and E. Fowler's sacrifice fly added another, making it 3-0. Virginia State responded quickly, narrowing the gap to 3-2 with a sacrifice fly from Shamya Hankins and a single by Chole Garland. They tied the game at 3-3 when Jaya Diggs-Hagwood drove in Hailey Darrington. Chowan regained the lead, scoring two more runs with E. Ingle's single and another sacrifice fly from E. Fowler, putting the score at 5-3. They extended their lead to 6-3 after a Virginia State error allowed A. Mizell to score. Virginia State fought back with Nia Hall's single, closing it to 6-4. Chowan then expanded their lead to 8-4 before Virginia State responded again, narrowing the score to 8-6 with a double from Mylia Knight and another sacrifice fly from Hankins. The game concluded with Chowan winning 8-6 against Virginia State. 

The Trojans will return to the plate on March 8, 2025, at 2 & 4 pm against Millersville University.
