Trojans drop first two against Lock Haven

Ettrick, Va. (Feb. 7, 2025)- Playing their first two of four games against Lock Haven teh Virginia State University Baseball team dropped game one, 3-0 and game two, 9-2 in Friday's double header. 

GAME 1 VSO 0 LHU 3 

  • Gavin Stevens started the game striking out two of the first three batters he saw 

  • In the bottom of the first TJ McGowan got on via the fielders choice followed by a single by Jaquan Tucker to set up runners on first and second, but the Trojans couldn't score 

  • The Bald Eagles took advantage of a one out walk which was followed by a single to move the runner to third. Another single brought in the games first run 

  • In both the second and third VSU went down in order and Marquis Smith walked in the fourth before VSU struck out to end that inning

  • In the fifth Lock Haven started off the inning with a homerun to left field. Then a walk followed by back-to-back singles loaded the bases. However Stevens managed to escape the jam only allowing a run on a sacrifice fly 

  • In the bottom half of the inning Jaron Ward got on first after an error and got to second after a wild pitch, but LHU would then sit down the next three Trojans 

  • The Trojans wouldn't get another baserunner in the final two innings 

  • Charles Jones took over in the sixth inning and obtained two strikeouts in his two innings of work 

  • Stevens now move to 0-2 on the season 

GAME 2 VSU 2 LHU 9 

  • Jaden Guthrie hit a one out double in the bottom half, followed by a HBP for Tucker and then another HBP for McGowan to load the bases. A fielder's choice got LHU a second out but keep the bases loaded. A walk for Victor Johnson brought in VSU's first run 

  • The Bald Eagles answered quick though hitting a one out triple followed by a ground out to short to tie the game 

  • Both teams struggled to find offense in the second through fourth innings 

  • In the fifth Lock Haven hit a three run homerun to break the tie. VSU answered with one in the bottom half after Hector Rivera triple followed by a Guthrie ground out 

  • In the top of the seventh LHU exploded for five runs to put the game out of reach 

  • Branzelle now moves to 0-2 on the season 

VSU drops to 0-5 now early and return to Sunday to play another double header against Lock Haven starting at 11 AM.
