Trojans Triumph: Virginia State Secures Victory Against Virginia Union in Thrilling Showdown

Richmond, VA- The Trojans of Virginia State University went against Virginia Union in an across-town matchup on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 4 pm. 


Virginia Union burst onto the court with infectious energy as Jonathan King opened the scoring with a dazzling fast-break layup, putting his team ahead 2-0. However, Virginia State quickly responded; Clint Wright Jr. sank a three-pointer, nudging his team into the lead at 6-3. The tension on the court was palpable as both teams exchanged baskets in a fierce battle for dominance. 

Just when Virginia Union seemed to find their rhythm, Travis Vaughn joined the fray with a clutch three-pointer, stretching their advantage to 9-5. Yet, Virginia State's Jacob Cooper wasn't about to let his opponents pull away; he sliced the deficit with a well-executed layup, bringing the score to 9-7. The game became a rollercoaster ride of turnovers and near misses, reflecting the fierce determination of both squads. 

As the first half progressed, Virginia State surged ahead, with Clint Wright Jr. hitting another impressive three-pointer to seize a 16-12 lead. He later delivered a stunning jumper, capping off an exhilarating period that saw Virginia State take a solid 38-28 lead into halftime.

The second half began with Virginia State's Jayson Harris making his presence felt, sinking two free throws that extended the lead to 40-28. Virginia Union's Jonathan King quickly answered back with a slick layup and a free throw, narrowing the score to 40-31 and igniting a spark in his team.

But Virginia State wasn't finished. Tim Uzochuwku electrified the crowd with a powerful dunk, pushing the advantage to 42-33. The intensity amped up as both teams continued to trade baskets, with Virginia State maintaining the upper hand. 

Momentum swung further in Virginia State's favor when Kendall Bynum drained a stunning three-pointer, stretching the lead to 51-38. Virginia Union's Dalyaun Mitchell responded with a jumper, yet Virginia State fired back again; Jared White knocked down another three-pointer, increasing the score to 57-40.

As the half drew to a thrilling close, Virginia State led 74-62, bolstered by crucial free throws from Jacob Cooper. This final score secured a well-deserved victory for the Virginia State University Trojans.

The Trojans will head to Baltimore, MD to compete in the CIAA Basketball tournament.
