Elizabeth City, NC - In a decisive basketball game, Virginia State demonstrated its dominance over Elizabeth City State with a convincing victory. The game featured strong defensive plays, efficient scoring, and strategic teamwork from Virginia State. 

Virginia State started the game strong, quickly establishing an early lead with several fast baskets, including a jumper from Daryl Mackey Jr. and a layup by Jayson Harris. They built a 6-0 advantage within the first few minutes. In contrast, Elizabeth City State struggled at the beginning, facing missed shots and turnovers thanks to a strong opening defensive effort by VSU.  

As the game progressed, Virginia State extended their lead even further, thanks to strong defensive plays and timely baskets, including a couple of fast-break layups by Jacob Cooper and Clint Wright Jr. Elizabeth City State found it difficult to maintain consistency and missed crucial opportunities to narrow the gap. Ending the half the Trojans would see their lead be at 15 points 34-19. 

In the second half, Virginia State maintained the lead throughout the game, thanks to strong performances from players like Cooper, Wright Jr., and Tyrek Williams. They made several significant contributions, including fast-break layups, crucial three-pointers, and effective defensive stops. As a result, Virginia State built a comfortable lead and controlled the game's tempo for much of the time. 

Elizabeth City State fought back, however, they struggled with consistency and found it difficult to close the gap. Malik Johnson made a late push for ECSU with a dunk and a jumper, but it wasn't enough to change the outcome. Ultimately, Virginia State secured a 72-58 victory, bolstered by their effective fast-break game, solid shooting, and strong defensive efforts. 

The Trojans will face the Braves from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke on February 5, 2025, at 6 PM.
