MURFREESBORO, NC --Sydney Roberts knocked down a shot with 13 seconds left on the clock to put the Virginia State women's basketball team up for good in a 73-71 victory over the Chowan Hawks on the road Saturday.
The Trojans (5-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Roberts, who had 18 points and two steals. Michaela Lane added 18 points and Kendahl Spearman helped out with 15 points and two steals off the bench.
Virginia State out-rebounded Chowan 36-34 in Saturday's game, led by nine boards from Kiara Beal. The Trojans also grabbed 13 offensive rebounds and scored 17 second chance points.
Virginia State did a great job disrupting Chowan shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Savana Goodson led the way individually for the Trojans with two rejections.
How It Happened
Virginia State kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 19-18.
Chowan kept adding to that lead, building a 35-30 advantage before Virginia State went on a 6-0 run to take a 36-35 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Virginia State dominated in the paint, scoring 14 of its 18 points close to the basket.
Chowan then took a 37-36 lead following intermission before Virginia State went on a 6-0 run to grab a 42-37 lead with 7:03 to go in the third. Before the conclusion of the third period, the Hawks had cut into that lead somewhat, but the Trojans still entered the fourth quarter with a 59-57 edge. Virginia State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 23 points in the paint.
The Trojans then held on for the victory in the fourth quarter. Virginia State took advantage of eight Chowan turnovers in the quarter, scoring five points off of those takeaways.
