Defensive effort leads Virginia State over Fayetteville State 55-46

PETERSBURG, VA --The Virginia State women's basketball team held Fayetteville State to just 13.3 percent from 3-point range in a 2-for-15 shooting performance on the way to a 55-46 win against the Broncos at home Thursday.

The Trojans (6-2, 1-0) had two players score in double figures, led by Kiara Beal, who had 14 points. Michaela Lane added a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Shayla Wyatt added six points and six rebounds.

Led by Lane's six offensive rebounds, Virginia State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 16 boards that resulted in 16 second chance points.

Virginia State's defense held Fayetteville State to only 32.1 percent shooting from the field, including 13.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Trojans also limited KaNyah O'Neal to 2-of-15 shooting and seven points in the game.

How It Happened

After falling behind 3-2, Virginia State went on a 7-0 run with 8:40 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Kendahl Spearman, to take a 9-3 lead. The Trojans then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 12-5 advantage. Virginia State did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring six of its 12 points close to the basket.

Virginia State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on a 5-0 run starting at the 8:14 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Skylar White, to increase its lead to 17-8. The Broncos cut into that lead, but the Trojans still enjoyed a 23-16 advantage heading into halftime. Virginia State scored seven of its 11 total points in the period on second chance opportunities created by pulling down three offensive rebounds.

Fayetteville State then took a 34-31 lead following intermission before Virginia State went on a 7-0 run to grab a 38-34 lead with 13 seconds to go in the third. The Trojans held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 39-35 edge. Virginia State played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.

Virginia State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 47-42 before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Beal's layup, to grow the lead to 53-42 with 1:13 to go in the contest. The Broncos narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Trojans still cruised the rest of the way for the 55-46 win.
