Virginia State wins turnover battle but loses 75-68 to North Carolina-Pembroke

PETERSBURG, VA --The Virginia State men's basketball team had 10 fewer turnovers than North Carolina-Pembroke, but fell 75-68 to the Braves at home Saturday.

The Trojans (4-5) had three players score in double figures, led by Jacob Cooper, who had 15 points and six rebounds. Jared Clawson tacked on 14 points off of the bench and Jared White helped out with 14 points.

The Virginia State defense was effective at taking away the basketball in Saturday's game, forcing 19 North Carolina-Pembroke turnovers while committing nine. Those takeaways turned into 20 points on the other end of the floor. William Hopkins led the way individually for the Trojans with three steals.

How It Happened

After falling behind 8-2, Virginia State went on a 6-0 run with 14:17 left in the first half to tie the game at eight. North Carolina-Pembroke then pulled ahead, sending the Trojans into halftime down 35-29.

North Carolina-Pembroke kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 71-63 advantage before Virginia State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by White's jumper, to shrink the deficit to 71-68 with 35 seconds to go in the contest. North Carolina-Pembroke responded and outscored the Trojans the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 75-68. Virginia State capitalized on 11 North Carolina-Pembroke turnovers in the period, collecting 13 points off those turnovers.
