All Virginia State starters scored in double digits in 87-83 loss to Shaw

PETERSBURG, VA --The Virginia State men's basketball team saw all five starters score at least 10 points, but it was not enough in an 87-83 loss to the Shaw Bears at home Tuesday.

The Trojans (5-7, 1-2) had five players score in double figures, led by Jacob Cooper, who had 15 points and seven assists. William Hopkins tacked on 14 points and two steals and Jared White chipped in as well with 13 points.

Virginia State shared the ball well in Tuesday's game, racking up 16 assists on 31 made field goals. Cooper's seven assists paced the Trojans.

Virginia State did a great job disrupting Shaw shots in the contest, coming away with seven blocks. Davian Coleman's two rejections led the way individually for the Trojans.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 19-16 advantage, Virginia State went on an 8-0 run with 10:12 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Hopkins, to increase its lead to 27-16. Shaw then responded to tie things up at 38-38 heading into halftime. Virginia State got the job done in the paint in the first half, scoring 26 of its 38 points close to the basket.

Shaw then snagged an 85-76 advantage before Virginia State responded by going on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 85-81 with 15 seconds to go in the contest. The Trojans were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 87-83. Virginia State took care of business in the paint, recording 24 of its 45 points in the lane.
