ERIE, PA --The Virginia State men's basketball team got a 30-point performance from the bench on the way to a 74-64 win against the Mansfield (PA) Mountaineers at home Sunday.
The Trojans (4-3) had four players score in double figures, led by Davian Coleman, who had 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. Amare Wimbush tacked on 12 points and eight rebounds from the bench and William Hopkins chipped in as well with 10 points.
Virginia State utilized great ball movement in Sunday's game, piling up 17 assists on 31 made field goals. Individually, Jordan Lambert lent a helping hand the most for the Trojans with four assists and Brandon Hilliard also added three assists of his own.
Virginia State did a great job disrupting Mansfield (PA) shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Coleman's two rejections led the way individually for the Trojans.
How It Happened
Virginia State started out the scoring by going on an 8-0 run, culminating in a three from Hopkins, to take an early lead with 18:00 left in the first half. The Trojans then lost some of that lead, but still entered halftime with a 33-32 advantage. Virginia State did most of its first half damage in the paint, scoring 20 of its 33 points close to the basket.
Following intermission, Virginia State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 61-57 before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Hopkins' layup, to grow the lead to 70-57 with 49 seconds to go in the contest. The Mountaineers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Trojans still cruised the rest of the way for the 74-64 win. Virginia State took care of business in the paint, recording 28 of its 41 points in the lane.
