Virginia State cruises to 82-64 victory against UDC

Washington, D.C. (Nov. 22, 20225) --The Virginia State men's basketball team got a 31-point performance from the bench on the way to an 82-64 victory against the UDC Firebirds on the road Saturday.

The Trojans (2-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Jordan Lambert, who had 21 points, seven assists and two steals. Brandon Hilliard tacked on 10 points and Amare Wimbush added nine points, six rebounds and three steals.

Virginia State took advantage of excellent ball movement in Saturday's game, piling up 23 assists on 28 made field goals. Lambert's seven assists paced the Trojans.

The Virginia State defense held UDC shooters to just 32.8 percent from the field, including 28.6 percent from three-point range. The Trojans also kept Ty Williams to 3-of-12 shooting and 10 points in the game.

How It Happened

After playing to a 17-17 tie, Virginia State went on a 10-0 run with 9:18 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Lambert, to take a 27-17 lead. The Trojans then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 38-27 advantage. Virginia State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 14 of its 38 total points.

Following intermission, Virginia State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 57-43 before going on a 6-0 run to grow the lead to 63-43 with 8:38 to go in the contest. The Firebirds narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Trojans still cruised the rest of the way for the 82-64 win. Virginia State got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 17 of its 44 total points.
