CHARLESTON, W,Va. --The Virginia State women's basketball team got a 29-point performance from the bench, but fell 66-62 to the Charleston (WV) Golden Eagles on the road Wednesday.
The Trojans (1-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Mekayla Furman, who had 18 points and two steals. Michaela Lane tacked on a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and Sydney Roberts chipped in as well with 11 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Led by Kendahl Spearman's three offensive rebounds, Virginia State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in six second chance points.
Virginia State forced 17 Charleston (WV) turnovers while committing only nine themselves in Wednesday's game. The Trojans turned those takeaways into 16 points on the offensive end of the floor. Roberts' three steals led the way for Virginia State.
How It Happened
After falling behind 13-6, Virginia State went on a 10-0 run with 3:51 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Maya Ellis, to take a 16-13 lead. Charleston (WV) then responded to tie things up at 16-16 heading into the second quarter. Virginia State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 16 points.
The Golden Eagles then eked out an advantage in quarter number two as the Trojans headed into the breaking trailing 30-29.
Charleston (WV) continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 40-35 advantage before Virginia State went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Furman, to grab a 41-40 lead with 4:03 to go in the third. Charleston (WV) responded to seize a 48-44 lead entering the fourth quarter. Virginia State took advantage of three Charleston (WV) turnovers in the quarter, scoring four points off of takeaways.
Charleston (WV) kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 53-46 advantage before Virginia State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Roberts' layup, to shrink the deficit to 53-51 with 5:18 to go in the contest. Charleston (WV) responded and outscored the Trojans the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 66-62. Virginia State took advantage of seven Charleston (WV) turnovers in the quarter, scoring six points off of those takeaways.
