Defensive effort leads Virginia State over UDC 55-52

Washington,D.C. (Nov. 22, 2025) --The Virginia State women's basketball team kept UDC to just 5.3 percent from beyond the arc in a 1-for-19 shooting performance on the way to a 55-52 victory over the Firebirds on the road Saturday.

The Trojans (2-2) had three players score in double figures, led by Michaela Lane, who notched a double-double with 17 points and 18 rebounds. Sydney Roberts added 12 points and five assists and Kendahl Spearman chipped in as well with 11 points off of the bench.

Virginia State out-rebounded UDC 54-36 in Saturday's game, paced by Lane's 18 boards. The Trojans also collected 18 offensive rebounds and scored 12 second chance points.

The Virginia State defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 15 UDC turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 11 points on the offensive end of the floor. Alexis Blake's two steals led the way individually for the Trojans.

How It Happened

After falling behind 4-2, Virginia State went on a 6-0 run with 7:58 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Mekayla Furman, to take an 8-4 lead. The Trojans then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 16-15.

Virginia State fought back to tie the game at 20-20 before going on a 9-0 run to take a 29-20 lead, a score that would hold until halftime. Virginia State dominated in the paint, scoring 10 of its 14 points close to the basket.

After intermission, Virginia State held on to its advantage and owned a 44-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Virginia State's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled six of the team's 15 third-quarter points.

Virginia State kept its lead intact before going on a 6-0 run, finished off by Spearman's jumper, to grow the lead to 50-41 with 4:40 to go in the contest. The Firebirds narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Trojans still held on for the 55-52 win. Virginia State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring seven of its 11 total points.
