MURFREESBORO, N.C. --The Virginia State men's basketball team got a 30-point showing from the bench on the way to a 74-63 win over the Chowan Hawks on the road Wednesday.
The Trojans (1-2) had two players score in double figures, led by Jordan Lambert, who had 14 points and six rebounds. Jared Clawson added 11 points, four assists and three steals off the bench and Davian Coleman added eight points, 12 rebounds, two steals and three blocks.
Led by Coleman's five offensive rebounds, Virginia State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 17 boards that resulted in 17 second chance points.
Virginia State did a great job disrupting Chowan shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Coleman's three rejections led the way individually for the Trojans.
How It Happened
After falling behind 13-11, Virginia State went on a 9-0 run with 12:28 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Brandon Hilliard, to take a 20-13 lead. The Trojans then added one point to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 42-34 advantage. Virginia State got a great contribution from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 17 of its 42 total points.
Following intermission, Virginia State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 62-51 before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Lambert's three, to grow the lead to 67-51 with 6:39 to go in the contest. The Hawks narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Trojans still cruised the rest of the way for the 74-63 win. Virginia State took care of business in the paint, recording 16 of its 32 points in the lane.
