Miami, Fla. (Sept. 7, 2024)- Playing in their final game in the Barry Invitational the Virginia State University Volleyball team dropped the match against the host in straight sets, 3-0.
The Buccaneers started the match on a 5-1 run, with two service aces. Barry would double up VSU, 10-5 after three kills and an attacking error on the Trojans. VSU would find themselves down 15-6 but rattled off the next four points with kills by Amaya Cooper and Morgan Green plus a service ace from Leila Jackson. However, BU answered with four straight points to expand their advantage to nine, 19-10. Barry got to within two pints of winning the set, 23-14, but the Trojans answered with three straight kills and a block by Gracie Darville and Anya McKinley to make it 23-18. The Bucs would get a pair of kills to win the set 25-19.Â
The second set started like the first with Barry jumping to a quick 7-2 lead. VSU managed to take advantage of some Buccaneers errors and make it a tie game 8 after back-to-back attack errors and a block assist by Darville and Helena Eubanks. The teams would go back and forth with neither gaining much separation until a 4-0 run for Barry gave them a 16-12 advantage. Barry ended the game scoring nine of the last 15 points to win the set 25-17.Â
Barry controlled the third set starting with a 14-5. Â However, the quick two-point swing was mute as the Buccaneers won 25-11. Darville led the team with six kills followed by Green with five. The team will be home for a week before getting ready for the Concord Classic on September 20 and 21st.Â
