Athens, W. Va. (Sept. 21, 2024)- In the final day of the Concord Classic the Virginia State University volleyball team dropped their first match to Davis and Elkins 3-2 and then sweep West Virginia Wesleyan College 3-0.

GAME 1 D&E 3 VSU 2

  • Virginia State lead in the first set seven to three early before doubling up the Senator 14-7 with a four point run with a kill from Morgan Green, a service ace from Peyton Reese and two attacking errors

  • The Trojans ended the set with a 6-1 run to win the set 25-14. Set two was a back and forth affair until the Trojans used a five point swing to grab a 13-10 advantage with Anya Mckinley and Gracie Darville registering kills

  • The Senators would use a 10-2 run to be the first team to get to 20 points. The Trojans managed to battle back but D&E would win the set 29-27

  • In the third set Davis & Elkins jumped out early with a 13-4 lead and never looked back as they would win the set 25-16.

  • Neither team would gain much separation until a kill from Green and a service ace by Kellee Craig put VSU up by four points, 20-16. The Senators would get to 20 points but a bad set from D&E would give VSU the win 25-20

  • In the fifth set Davis & Elkins doubled up the Trojans 6-3. VSU would manage to tie the game at seven with a Green kill and an attacking error

  • From there the teams would continue to trade points until the Senators scored the last two to win the match 16-14

  • Three Trojans recorded double digit kills Mckinley (14), Green (12) and Darville (10)

GAME 2 WVWC 0 VSU 3

  • Neither team could separate from the other early in the match as the Trojans would see themselves up 24-21 after a service ace from Darville. A bad set from the Bobcats would give set point to VSU who won 25-23

  • After being down 8-7 early in the second set, VSU would go on a 7-1 run with only Helena Eubanks and Leila Jackson recording kills to be up 14-9

  • The Trojans would get the score to 20-11 after an Adrianna Bacon service ace. VSU would eventually win the set 25-17 with a kill from Celene Mclean

  • In the third set VSU and WVWC would continue to play a tight game with the Trojans only holding a one-point lead, 11-10
