Trojans sweep Lions; Win by run rule in game two

Ettrick, Va (Apr. 6, 2024)- The Virginia State University softball team continued to stay hot sweeping Lincoln University 7-2 in game one and 8-0 in game 2. 

GAME 1 VSU 7 LUP 2 

  • Alaijah Pratt hit a one out single then Jaya Diggs-Hagwood followed with her own single. Mylian Knight then walked to load the bases. Shamya Hankins then singled past the shortstop to score two runs. Skye Corum then singled through the right side to score another making it 3-0 

  • IN the second inning Hailey Darrington got on after an error by the second baseman and Pratt singled to set up runners on the corners. Knight would hit an RBI ground out to get VSU's fourth run 

  • Corum singled in the third inning before Makailah Harmon then came in to pinch run. Maisie Spivey then had a two out walk before both stole second and third. Darrington then singled up the middle to score Harmon making it 5-0 

  • The Lions managed to score two runs in the top of the fourth inning, however VSU scored those two runs back in their half of the inning 

  • Kara Green then shut down the Lions for the last three innings securing her fourth win on the season 

GAME 2 VSU 8 LUP 0 

  • Pratt shut down the Lions 1-2-3 in the top of the first inning. Darrington singled up the middle and then Alani Horton scored, her with her own single. Knight then doubled to center to get both runners in scoring position. Hankins then scored both runs with a single. Nia Hall than tripled on the next pitch to score Hankins to make it 5-0 

  • Neither team could build momentum in the next three innings to get any runs on the board 

  • In the bottom of the fifth Knight doubled to start off the inning, followed by a Hankins walk and a Corum single up the middle to load the bases. Hall then singled through the left side to score one and Spivey doubled to score the final two runs 

The Trojans move to 13-2 overall and 8-0 in conference and will play tomorrow against Bowie State for a double header starting at 12 pm.
