Baseball takes three of four games over senior weekend

Ettrick, Va. (Apr. 28, 2024)- The Virginia State University baseball team took three out of the four games against Lighthouse Christian over the senior weekend winning the last two on walk offs. 

GAME 1 VSU 5 LCC 12 

  • Both teams would do nothing in the first three innings. The Makos then added two runs in the fourth and a pair of RBI groundouts by Jimmyll Williams and T.J. McGowan tied it in the fifth inning 

  • LCC then scored nine in the top of the sixth to take control of the game and would never look back 

GAME 2 VSU 12 LCC 1 

  • Once again, the first three innings neither team had much going for either team 

  • In the bottom of the fourth Jamari Pooler singled to bring home a run. Then in the fifth inning the Trojans put up 11 runs with seven different players picking up an RBI and McGowan and Avante Banks both getting two RBI's 

  • Gavin Stevens pitched the full six innings while striking out seven  

Game 3 VSU 8 LCC 7 

  • LCC scored five runs in the first inning and Banks walked in a run in the bottom of the second to get the Trojans on the board 

  • In the fifth inning the Makos scored two runs and VSU scored on a error that put Norman Jackson on, Daniel Smith then walked with the bases loaded, and Banks singled up the middle to make the score 7-5 

  • Then in the bottom of the seventh back-to-back doubles by Victor Johnson and Laylen Lovett made it a one run game. Banks then doubled with runners set up on second and third. Williams then walked it off with his own double to make it 2-1 series lead 

  • Christian Henderson pitched the full seven innings picking up his third win 

Game 4 VSU 8 LCC 7 

  • Both teams would score again in the fourth inning with the Mako's scoring one in their half and Dawysn Hock hitting a 3 RBI double down the left field line 

  • Lighthouse Christian then tied the game in the sixth but in the bottom of the seventh the Trojans loaded the bases and Henderson lined out to short but as they tried to double up the runner on first the ball got away letting VSU win on a walk of for the second game in a row 

VSU is now 14-31 and will get ready for the NSAC tournament starting on May 2.
