Softball split on Senior Day versus Big Blue

Ettrick, Va (Apr. 14, 2024)- Before the double header Alani Horton, Maisie Spivey, Kara Green and Serenity Barbee were recognized on senior day. The Virginia State softball team split with Bluefield State to win game one 3-1 and dropping game 2 7-3.

GAME 1 VSU 3 BLU 1

  • Both teams would get a runner to second base, but neither would get past there

  • In the second Horton walked followed by a Spivey single and a Siann Meadows bunt single loaded the bases. Barbee would grind out a tough at bat that ended with a RBI walk

  • Alaijah Pratt would hit a sac fly to score the second run of the inning but a baserunning error would run the Trojans out of the inning

  • Green would set down the Big Blue in the third and fourth innings. In the bottom of the fourth Horton started with a single then a walk by Spivey. Both would then advance on a wild pitch. Barbee then hit an RBI ground out

  • In the fifth inning Bluefield State would get a run back, but neither team managed much more offense after that

  • Green would pick up her seventh win of the year

GAME 2 VSU 3 BLU 7

  • The Big Blue started off hot as they would put up three runs in the top of the first and one more in the second while holding VSU to only one hit

  • Neither team would manage much more offense until the bottom of the sixth inning

  • Chloe Garland managed to get to third after an error by the right fielder, Shamaya Hankins then shot a single up the middle to get the Trojans on the board. Reina Washington then hit a two out single and with a pass ball would get runners on third and second

  • Spivey then singled up the middle to score another run then Makailah Harmon singled to third base to score the third run of the inning

  • However, the Big Blue would add three runs in the top of the seventh and the new pitcher would set down the Trojans 1-2-3 in their half to hand them their first conference loss
