Trojan sweep final conference double header

Richmond, Va (Apr. 20, 2024)- The Virginia State University softball team swept the Panthers of Virginia Union 7-1 in game 1 and 8-0 in game 2. 

GAME 1 VSU 7 VUU 1 

  • Both teams went down in order in the first inning and the Trojans would get a player on in the second 

  • In the third inning Siann Meadows reached via an error then got to third after a ground out. Hailey Darrington then hit a bunt single that brought in Meadows 

  • VUU managed to tie the game in the bottom of the third. In the fourth Shamya Hankins started with a single then advanced to third on an error by the left fielder. Maisie Spivey then hit a one out single to ring in Hankins 

  • VSU put up four runs in the fifth. It started with a Darrington single then advanced to second. Alaijah Pratt then hit a single to get runners on the corners. Jaya Diggs-Hagwood then advanced to second after another error which allowed Darrington to score. Mylia Knight would then hit a three-run home run to make it a 6-1 game 

  • A pair of errors let Meadows add an insurance run in the sixth and Kara Green would only give up a single hit over the sixth and seventh innings. Green would pick up another win with a complete game 

GAME 2 VSU 8 VUU 0 

  • VSU would put up six runs in the third inning. Darrington started with a walk, Pratt then hit a bunt single and Diggs-Hagwood singled to center to load the bases. Knight reached via an error which allowed two runs to score. A wild pitch then allowed Diggs-Hagwood to score. Alani Horton singled to score Knight. Back-to-back hits by Chloe Garland and Meadows allowed two more runs to score 

  • Pratt, who started game 2 only gave up two hits in five innings 

  • Horton managed to get to second after two errors in the fifth inning. Nia Hall then singled to get runners on the corners. Hall the stole second to get runners on second and third with no one out 

  • Garland then hit an RBI-groundout and Meadows singled up the middle to make it 8-0 

VSU ends the season 20-3 overall and 15-1 in conference while Virginia Union ends the season 8-10 and 8-8 in conference. The Trojans ended the season in first place in the northern division and the best overall record in the CIAA.
