Trojans split with Gators

Ettrick, Va. (Apr. 10, 2024)- The Virginia State University baseball team welcomed Virginia Peninsula CC for a double header and won game 1 12-2 but dropped game two 12-6. 

GAME 1 VSU 12 VPCC 2 

  • The Trojans started the game off hot with Jimmyll Williams singling to second base followed by a single by Christian Henderson. Jaquan Tucker then walked with one out to load the bases. Jamari Pooler hit a sac fly followed by a Norman Jackson single and then a double by Victor Johnson to make it 3-0 

  • The Gators got two runs in the top of the second. Then neither team would score again until the fifth when VSU hung up six runs. After the bases were loaded Johnson hit another double to score two more than Avante Banks hit a 2-RBI single then a double steal let Matthew May score then TJ McGowan hit a single up the middle 

  • The Trojans added three more in the fourth inning and in the fifth Preston Branzelle shut down the gators to pick up his second win of the season 

  • Both Banks and Johnson had 3 RBI's in game 1 

GAME 2 VSU 6 VPCC 12 

  • Both teams would score in the second inning but VPCC four runs in the second inning to take the momentum  

  • The Trojans managed to get a run back in the third inning but the Gators and Trojans had two runs in the fourth inning 

  • Over the fifth and sixth inning VPCC added another five runs taking advantage of three Trojan errors 

  • VSU managed to get two runs back in the seventh, but it was too little too late 

With the split VSU moves to 11-19 overall. They will hit the road for a series at Lincoln University with a double header on April 13 and a single game on Sunday April 14.
